I recently had the opportunity to try something out of my red wine comfort zone – a handcrafted cocktail – what a treat!
Ordering a drink today is intimidating business. Whether at the local coffee shop or at the Club – with so many choices, how does one know what would suit their taste? I hope my story will encourage you to try.
An experienced bartender is a must, as they know the intricacies of flavor combinations and can create for you. Like a Chef in the kitchen – but at the bar you get to watch the artist at work.
Bravely, I walked up to the bar and when asked for my order, admitted I had no idea. The exchange began with my sharing that Rum would not do, and moved into flavors and spirits I like. From that point, Sharon McLellan, MCC’s Restaurant Manager, who was helping tend bar this night took over. She began with fresh lime juice, added liqueurs with aromatics, bitters, and Gin over ice and after some rhythmic shaking, gently poured the golden liquid into a coupe glass. The finishing touch was plopping in what looked like a blueberry – a maraschino cherry. Even that was an adventure! The real maraschino cherry had a lovely cherry flavor and a delightful, nut-like crunch.
Watching the crafting of my cocktail was interesting and fun, and the taste was nothing short of amazing. As she presented it I asked the name, “Full Moon Revival” Sharon announced with pride. After thanking her, I walked away happily knowing what to ask for the next time – dilemma solved!
Fortunately or unfortunately, I learned later that is not so. Full Moon Revival is Sharon’s exclusive, a designer drink she created a couple of years ago. I cannot order it anywhere – just here at Maui Country Club. Lucky members, you can have one today!
